Skin Types by Dermatologists

In our previous post, we have come to know about the different skin colors. This post will discuss the different skin types according to dermatologists.  It is crucial to know your own type before delving into skincare. With this knowledge, you’re able to understand what products work and what don’t, what routine to take and how to mitigate if problems occur.

Here are the general skin types according to skin doctors.

Oily Skin – Produces excess oil (sebum), leading to shine, enlarged pores, and acne breakouts. More common in teenagers and young adults.

Simple Fix – Frequent cleansing and oil-control products.

Dry Skin – Lacks sufficient moisture and oils, feels tight and itchy, may flake/peel. More common in mature skin.

Simple Fix – Constant application of rich moisturizers and gentle cleansers.

Sensitive Skin – Easily irritated by skincare products, environment. Redness and stinging are common reactions.

Simple Fix – Requires fragrance-free and dye-free products with simple, soothing ingredients.

Combination Skin – A mix of oily and dry zones, often an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and dry cheeks. Very common skin type.

Simple Fix – Requires a balance of hydration and oil control by area.

Normal/Balanced Skin – Even texture, pore size, and moisture level. Not sensitive. Less common as an ongoing skin type.

There are also other skin types that are considered as conditions and might be caused by internal or external factors.  In the next post, we’ll look deeper into conditions such as acne-prone, rosacea, eczema and aging skin types.
